The Revue de musicologie, edited since 1917 by the Société française de musicologie, publishes articles covering all the objects, approaches and methods of the field of musicology, including in its most recent developments. The journal is happy to consider any proposal for an article in French or English that makes a scientific contribution to the discipline, on the history of music, music theory, musical aesthetics, or any other aspect of music and sound.
The Revue de musicologie publishes in English and French. It accepts only original texts that have not been previously published and are not subject to any other parallel evaluation process. Published texts vary in length, generally between 15 pages (about 35,000 characters or 5,500 words) and 40 pages (about 95,000 characters or 15,000 words) including all elements (spaces, footnotes, illustrations, appendices).
The Revue de musicologie adopts the principle of double blind peer review. Articles are evaluated by the Editorial Committee and, if necessary, by external referees. The texts submitted are subject to at least two independent reviews. The reviewers are appointed by the Editor-in-Chief, in agreement with the Editorial Board, on the sole basis of the subject of the article. Texts are anonymized before being evaluated and the name of the author is not communicated to the reviewers. The identity of the referees also remains confidential and their names are not communicated to the authors.
The Revue de musicologie is placed under the responsibility of the Editorial Board, represented by the Editor-in-Chief. It is under the scientific direction of the Editorial Committee, appointed by the latter for three years. The composition of the Editorial Board and the Editorial Committee can be consulted on the inside cover of each issue, as well as on the website of the Société française de musicologie.

ARTICLE PROPOSAL

Authors send their proposal in text format (.doc or .docx .or .rtf) and in portable format (.pdf) by e-mail to revuedemusicologie@gmail.com, with a copy to sfmusicologie@gmail.com. The subject of the message must indicate "Submission for the Revue de musicologie". In this working version, illustrations, musical examples and tables with captions are included in the text. Standardisation of the text and bibliographical references is preferable but not required at this stage. The author will, however, use footnotes in all cases and will conform to the academic traditions of the humanities.
The authors also mention in a separate document :
  •  the title of the submitted paper
  • a summary of the main conclusions of the text, the method used and the sources relied upon (about 10 lines)
  • a few lines of biographical presentation, if applicable their academic position
  • their full contact details (address, e-mail address, telephone).
It is possible to submit a scientific article, or a text for the "Notes and Documents" section. Texts published in this section, generally less developed, focus on a newly discovered source, which they present and describe. The analytical dimension is reduced in favour of factual evidence and a presentation of the research perspectives it opens up. Authors may, if they wish, specify the category they have in mind for their text.
In order to facilitate the anonymisation of articles, references to the author, including within the text and footnotes (acknowledgements, self-references, or personal hints, etc.) will, in the working version, be removed or reduced to the necessary minimum. If the author of the article refers to his or her own work, he or she should be careful to include in this version only those works which are considered essential and whose absence could be criticised by the experts with regard to the subject matter.

REVIEW AND PUBLICATION

After examining the various evaluation reports, the Editorial Committee may refuse or accept the submitted texts, with or without a request for modifications. This decision is communicated to the authors by the Editor-in-Chief within six months after the submission. If the author decides to submit the text again, he or she will clearly explain, in a separate letter, the changes made in response to the feedback received from the experts.
Once their paper has been accepted, authors should submit the following items to the Journal within four to six weeks:
  1. The article (text only) in text (.doc or .docx or .rtf) and portable (.pdf) format. This must have been previously harmonized according to the editorial standards of the Revue de musicologie (cf. attached document). The location of illustrations, musical examples or tables must be clearly indicated by the mention [INSERT] followed by the number of the illustration, musical example or table.
  2. A bio-bibliographic record of the author not exceeding 1000 characters (150 words), and including an e-mail address.
  3. An abstract in French and an abstract in English of 1500 characters (200 words) each. For the writing of the abstract in English, the authors follow the protocol of the Répertoire International de Littérature Musicale (http://www.rilm.org/submissions/pdf/Abstracts.English.pdf).
  4. A file containing the musical examples in .pdf format. The musical examples are numbered and captioned. They must not exceed 118 mm in width and 184 mm in height; the height of the staves is 4.2 mm.
  5. A folder containing illustrations (.jpg format) or diagrams (.tiff format): one file per illustration, in high resolution (min. 600 dpi).
  6. The illustrations must be numbered. The captions (title and, if applicable, provenance, copyright) are integrated in the body of the text, where the illustrations should appear. Authors must ensure that they own the reproduction rights and provide the Revue de musicologie with proof of ownership of the reproduction right for each document.
  7. A file containing the tables in text (.doc or .docx or .rtf) and portable (.pdf) format, each table in a different file. The tables are numbered and captioned.

BOOK REVIEWS

The Reviews section of the Revue de musicologie proposes surveys of recent publications, musicological or relevant to this disciplinary field. The reviews include monographs, collective works, critical editions of texts or music, periodicals and digital publications (archives, databases, catalogues, virtual exhibitions, editions, etc.).
Three review formats are available: a standard format of between 1500 and 2500 words, a short format of between 300 and 400 words, and an extended format of up to 4000 words for joint reviews of several works. Reviews can be written in French or English. Authors wishing to review a particular work may submit their proposal by writing jointly to Catherine Deutsch (catherine.deutsch@univ-lorraine.fr) and Peter Asimov (pa403@cam.ac.uk).
