The Department of Media and Culture Studies invites applications for an appointment in Musicology at Assistant Professor level, starting August 15, 2022 or as soon as possible thereafter. The successful applicant is expected to complement the current teaching and research staff of Musicology. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in the (historical) relationships between music and media, yet we also welcome other fields of expertise, complementary to the research and teaching foci of our programmes.

Musicology at Utrecht University offers programmes at Bachelor’s, Master’s and doctoral level. The BA programme in Musicology (taught in both Dutch and English) has frequently been rated best programme of its kind in the Netherlands and offers fundamental training in musicology with a focus on historical musicology and music and media research. The 1-year MA in Applied Musicology offers intensive training for a career as a decision maker in the music world. The 2-year Research MA in Musicology prepares students for a research-oriented or academic career in music, including PhD studies. Both MA programmes are conducted in English. Research in musicology is incorporated into the organizational framework of the Institute for Cultural Inquiry (ICON).

The successful candidate will carry out research and teaching in musicology and will contribute to the internal administration of the department within a dynamic and challenging professional environment. Candidates are expected to have an excellent track record of teaching at both BA and MA level, including thesis supervision, and must demonstrate the willingness and ability to take on administrative tasks. Excellence in research must be shown by fulfilling several of the following criteria: a completed PhD, internationally recognized publications, presentations at (inter)national conferences, the convening of scholarly meetings on a national or international level, and/or successful funding applications.
